HAYS — The Ashe County High School Husky Vanguard Marching Band traveled down the mountain on Oct. 16 to North Wilkes High School to participate in their third band competition of the season, in which they placed in every caption.

After performing their set pulled from “The Blues Brothers,” the band went into the awards ceremony where they placed against three other bands in class 2A.

Placements were first place in the Spirit Award, third place color guard, first place drum major, third place percussion, second place music, second place general effect, second place marching and maneuvering, second place class rank and finally a rating of excellent.

The band is led by new director Joshua Mitchell, drum major Isabella Schiavone and captains as follows: Brass — Gabe Fogger, Woodwinds — Ana Blevins, Drum Line — Macie Richardson. Section Leaders: Flutes — Tristan Morrow, Clarinets — Lindsey Phipps, Saxophones — Harley Cox, Trumpets — Daniel Rodriguez, Low Brass — Connor Waterman, Front Ensemble — Vanessa Escudero. Color Guard — Abby Carpenter and Chloe Smith-Shepherd.

After placing third overall against 17 bands on Oct. 23 at the Newton-Conover competition, the band will now enter parade season which they will participate in the West Jefferson Thanksgiving Parade, the Thanksgiving Parade in Charlotte and the parade in Taylorsville.
