WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County Public Library has introduced a new program to help promote creativity and invites those of all ages to join its chess club.

Youth services specialist Molly Dawes has developed a new program, Molly’s Activities and Random Shenanigans, in relation to this year’s summer reading theme: “A Universe of Stories.” Activities related to the program include bubble painting and sand art. Rock painting is planned for the next event.

The library’s chess club meets at 3 p.m. on Fridays. A chess match requires quick thinking, problem-solving and also can spark creativity. Chess boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning.

For more information about the MARS program and other library events, visit the library’s Facebook page.

The library will be closed on July 4 to celebrate Independence Day and again on July 6 for Christmas in July. Visit the library tent at the festival to learn more about the library and meet the librarians.
