The following information was provided by Appalachian Health Care. Restaurants and food stands are inspected one to four times per year, based on assigned risk frequency, public school lunchrooms are inspected four times per year, seasonal swimming pools are inspected once per year and hospitals are inspected twice per year.

April 8

Ashe Memorial Hospital, located at 200 Hospital Avenue in Jefferson, received an “A” grade and a final score of 95. The hospital received a one-point demerit for wall cracks and water damage, a one-point demerit for inconveniently located facilities, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper soap and paper towels practices, a one-point demerit for needed furniture repair and a half-point demerit for improper patient contact item storage. Ashe Memorial Hospital received a 95 and a 97 in its previous two inspections.

April 9

Cocina Mexicana La Chatis, located at 419 East Main Street in Jefferson, received an “A” grade and a final score of 94.5. The restaurant received a two-point demerit for not having a certified food protection manager on shift, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper food protection and separation, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper cold holding temperatures and a half-point demerit for improper cooling methods. Cocina Mexicana La Chatis received a 96 and a 95.5 in its previous two inspections.

Mountain View Elementary School cafeteria, located at 2789 U.S. 221 in Jefferson, received an “A” grade and a final score of 99. The public school lunchroom received a one-point demerit for rusted/chipped non-food-contact surfaces. Mountain View Elementary School cafeteria received a 99 in each of its previous two inspections.

April 11

Ashe County Middle School Pool, located at 255 Northwest Lane in Warrensville, received 12 demerit points. The seasonal pool received a six-point demerit for an improper pH balance, a four-point demerit for a lack of spare pump basket and a two-point demerit for facility maintenance. Ashe County Middle School Pool received 12 and six demerit points in its previous two inspections.

Coffee House & Waffle Shop, located at 21 Beaver Creek School Road in West Jefferson, received an “A” grade and a final score of 93. The restaurant received a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper food separation and protection, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper cold holding temperatures, a three-point demerit for improper date marking and position, a half-point demerit for improper storage of in-use utensils and a half-point demerit for improper utensil drying. Coffee House & Waffle Shop received a 91.5 and a 93.5 in its previous two inspections.

April 12

Walmart Deli, located at 1489 Mount Jefferson Road in West Jefferson, received and “A” grade and a final score of 98.5. The food stand received a one-point demerit for toxic substances improperly stored and a half-point demerit for facility maintenance. The Walmart Deli received a 98 and a 96.5 in its previous two inspections.

Ashe Services for Aging kitchen, located at 180 Chattyrob Lane in West Jefferson, received an “A” grade and a final score of 98.5. The restaurant received a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper hot holding temperatures. Ashe Services for Aging kitchen received a 98.5 in each of its previous two inspections.

April 16

Ashe Memorial Hospital Cafeteria, located at 200 Hospital Avenue in Jefferson, received an “A” grade with a score of 95. The restaurant received a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper cold holding temperatures, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper date marking and disposition, a one-point demerit for contamination prevention and a one-point demerit for a leaky faucet. Ashe Memorial Hospital Cafeteria received a 97 and a 97.5 in its previous two inspections.

The Harvest Cafe, located at 234 East Main Street in Jefferson, received an “A” grade with a score of 98. The restaurant received a one-point demerit for a slow-draining sink, a half-point demerit for overflowing garbage cans and a half-point demerit for needed facility maintenance. The Harvest Cafe received a 98 and a 97.5 in its previous two inspections.

April 18

Ashe Outreach Kitchen, located at 11719 Highway 88 West in Creston, received an “A” grade with a score of 95. The restaurant received a two-point demerit for not having a certified food protection manager on staff, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper hot holding temperatures, a half-point demerit for unclean non-food-contact surfaces, a half-point demerit for improper location of grease container and a half-point demerit for improper lighting. The Ashe Outreach Kitchen received a 95 and a 95.5 in its previous two inspections.

Cabin Creek Diner, located at 829 East Main Street in Jefferson, received an “A” grade with a score of 92.5. The restaurant received a two-point demerit for jammed towel dispensers, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper cold holding temperatures, a one-point demerit for unlisted times on buffet food, a one-point demerit for improper contamination prevention, a one-point demerit for facility maintenance, a half-point demerit for wet QUAT test strips and a half-point demerit for unclean non-food-contact surfaces. The Cabin Creek Diner received a 90 and an 86 in its previous two inspections.
