Somers, Sullivan and Jones

Katey Jones, Dolores Somers and April Sullivan of The Tartan Woolly.

WEST JEFFERSON — Opened just in time for Christmas in July, The Tartan Woolly has brought some Scottish heritage and a bit of plaid to West Jefferson. The store on North Jefferson Avenue specializes in Scottish and Irish-styled clothing and accessories, with plaid and real wool adorning most of the store.

Dolores Somers, who owns the store with Stacey Jones, said the High Country has a deep connection with Ireland and Scotland and hopes to fill a niche no other store has. She said the store still has things left to add, such as an area for kilts. Somers said that after a trip to Great Britain, she knew the items in The Tartan Woolly had a potential home in the High Country.

Before it was storefront, it was a booth at the Past & Present antiques store just down the street. Somers said their single booth grew to a pair, and they eventually had to expand to a full store. She added they hope to give space in the store to other people in Ashe County with small booths, helping along others the same way they started up.
