New River Brewing

Despite not heavily marketing the soft opening, New River Brewing’s first day open had a continuous flow of visitors.

WEST JEFFERSON — The newest restaurant in West Jefferson had its soft opening Wednesday, June 19. After months of work and a move from Lansing, New River Brewing opened its doors to the public.

Aside from the Ashe-based brewers’ homemade beer, they’ve enlisted Kristin Howell, former owner of When Pigs Fly BBQ and Wings to bring her signature food to the 3rd Avenue location.

Owner Greg Hershner met with the West Jefferson Board of Aldermen June 3 to discuss the leasing of 7 feet wide strip of land in front of the building. Hershner’s plan is to fence it off and create an outdoor area for patrons to enjoy when the weather is nice.

West Jefferson Town Manager Brantley Price said the town is currently working with Hershner and has figured out the proper wording for leasing the space. Price said the aldermen will vote on the lease at their July meeting.
