Less than a year after finding new ownership, Blue Ridge Theater & Events Center has re-established itself as a premier location for Ashe County concerts, conferences, festivals, dances and — in 2019, and for years to come — even more, according to owner Steve Mochen.
“When I bought this place in August 2018, I saw a venue that was going to be something special for the people of Ashe County to come, have some fun and not be too expensive or too far away,” Mochen said. “Folks don’t have to drive an hour or two away for a show they want to go see — whether it be a concert, a craft show, a bluegrass festival or whatever.”
For family fun, Blue Ridge Theater hosts line dancing every Thursday night, and brought five national concert acts — including Confederate Railroad — to Ashe County in 2018, with plans for more in 2019, according to Mochen.
“We’re looking at other events we want to put together throughout the year,” Mochen said. “We want to open it up to events and things that people want to do.”
Already on Blue Ridge Theater’s slate is an artisan and crafters festival March 16 before the Ashe County Farmer’s Market opens up, Saturday night dances featuring live music and a bridal expo March 24, Mochen said. April 6 is a Pig Pickin’ BBQ & Bluegrass Festival featuring Boone’s Blue Country Band and a pig cooked by three-time world champion barbecue pit-master James Killian, Mochen said.
“We’re looking at doing a major car show, we’re looking at doing a bluegrass festival and we’re looking at doing some more barbecue events,” Mochen said.
Also in the works for Blue Ridge Theater are tribute performances by the Eagles, the Beatles and Journey tribute bands, according to Mochen — all leading up to the theater’s biggest event of the year Aug. 30 and 31.
“The Blue Ridge BBQ & Brew Fest is going to be a national competition,” Mochen said. “That’s the big one — we’re looking to have between 500 and 800 guests on Friday, and on Saturday we’re anticipating about 2,000 people showing up.”
Friday, Aug. 30 night will be a concert and wagyu steak grilling contest sponsored by the Steak Cookoff Association, and Saturday, Aug. 31 will feature a day full of some of the best barbecue cooks in the world showing off their skills, according to Mochen.
