CRESTON — Drizzling rain canceled the North Fork New River car rally, but barbecue, basketball and a bake sale persisted nonetheless at the Riverview Community Center from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Proceeds from the bake sale and $10 per plate pulled pork barbecue dinner benefitted the Riverview Community Club, according to board member Gene Painter.

“If somebody has a house fire or something like that, they come and ask the club for help — it’s mainly to help people in the community,” Painter said. “The club actually has the maintenance of the whole building, too.”

As part of its job maintaining the former Riverview Elementary and High School building, Painter said the club is looking to renovate the Riverview Community Center gym and starting a youth basketball league.

“We’ll probably have another car rally in the spring, when the weather is better,” Painter said.
