Former Jefferson resident turning 100

Former Ashe County resident Janice O. Wertz will turn 100-years-old Tuesday, Aug. 20. Still active and an avid reader, Wertz only recently switched to large print books. She has four children with husband Maynard. A longtime resident of Jefferson, Wertz was an early member of the Friends of the Library. She is still an active member of the Jefferson chapter of PEO International. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the U.S. after retirement. Wertz enjoyed her career as a chemist in the WWII era, before resigning in order to marry, as was the custom in those days.
