ASHE COUNTY — Career educator Polly Jones filed for re-election to the Ashe County Board of Education June 5, according to the county board of elections.

Jones served as a school teacher for 28 years and currently teaches at Wilkes Community College, according to the filing document. She is seeking her third term on the board of education.

At presstime, Jones was unavailable for comment.

The candidate filing period for the Ashe County Board of Education opened at noon Monday, June 4 and runs until noon on July 6. In addition to the incumbent Jones filing for re-election, Steve Johnson, owner of Steve Johnson Autoworld, and incumbent Terry Williams have also filed to run.

The current iteration of the board is in the process of finalizing a plan for the new middle school, a project that is estimated to cost over $30 million. The board recently formed the Safe Schools Committee, an effort increase school safety in Ashe County in response to the multiple school shootings nationwide.

Ashe County Board of Education elections will be held Nov. 6, as part of the general election.
