Dr. Ronnie Alan Manchette, 72, of West Jefferson, N.C., passed away Thursday morning, December 13, 2018, at Margate Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Dr. Manchette was born in Evansville, IN on September 6, 1946, to the late William Alan and Christiane Delvallez Manchette.
As a teenager, he distinguished himself by attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. After completing his education and training, he practiced optometry in Florida, caring for many people through the years.
Dr. Manchette also honorably served his country with seven years active duty in the United States Army, and over twenty years in a Field Medical Hospital Unit in the Army Reserves. In 2006, he retired from his military service with the rank of Lt. Colonel, and retired from his practice of optometry as well.
In addition to his love of the military, he loved old cars, especially Corvettes and Mustangs. He also took pleasure in deep-sea fishing, snow skiing, and riding his motorcycles, when he had the time. Dr. Manchette was an active member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in their choir for many years. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Janet Ferris Manchette; a daughter, Courtney Hubbell and husband, Chris, of Lake Worth, Fla; a stepdaughter, Kerri Whittaker and husband, Stan, of Boone; two sisters, Bonnie Rinehart of West Jefferson and Monique Smith and husband, David, of Naples, Fla; a brother, Gene Manchette and wife, Delores, of Naples, Fla; three grandchildren, Lydia Nash, Veronica Nash, and Matthew Hubbell of Lake Worth, Fla; two step grandchildren, Emily Whittaker and Trey Whittaker of Boone; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two furry friends, Mandy and Lexi, who miss him greatly.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018, at Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Fleetwood, N.C. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Toby Oliver and the Rev. John Elledge officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites.
