George Edwin Houck

Mr. George Edwin Houck, better known as Edwin, 89, of West Jefferson, N.C., passed away Wednesday morning, January 2, 2019, at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 6, 2019, at 3:00 p.m., at Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Money officiating. Burial followed in the Bethany Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m., at Bethany United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

Mr. Houck was born in Ashe County, N.C., on August 4, 1929, to the late Ross Dixon and Ann Houck.

In his younger years, Edwin worked at a sawmill with his father. He worked as the Parts Manger at John Cook Subaru and managed and was part owner of Gentry & Houck Building Supply. He also worked as the bookkeeper for Ray’s Drug Store. He was the oldest and biggest Duke fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving father and will be missed by all.

Mr. Houck is survived by a son, Rick Houck and wife, Pam, of West Jefferson; a daughter, Alice Collins-Sharpe and husband, Dennis, of West Jefferson; four grandchildren Suzanne Randolph and husband, Tim, of West Jefferson, Mary Ann Collins, of Durham, Mandy Lambert and husband, Del, of Lincolnton and Meredith Houck and husband, Matt Brikley, of Washington, DC; four great-grandchildren Will, Anna, Chandler and Lincoln; one step grandchild, five step great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Wynona Hodges, of Baltimore, MD, Rose Cook, of Boone, and Davia Cook, of Warrensville; a caregiver, Cindy Silver, of Crumpler; a furry cat, George; several nieces and nephews also survive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, Bethany United Methodist Church, 495 NC Hwy 194 South, West Jefferson, NC 28694; Ashe Services for Aging, 180 Chatty Rob Lane, West Jefferson, NC 28694; or to Watauga Humane Society, 312 Paws Way, Boone, NC 28607.
