Rufus Lee Shepherd, known as Lee Roy to his friends and family, 88, of Darlington, MD, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on April 24, 2019, after a long illness.
Lee Roy was born in Hemlock, N.C., on April 1, 1931, to the late John Byron Shepherd and Rosa Belle (Joines) Sheherd.
On February 12, 1956, in Lansing, N.C., he married his wife of 63 years, Nell (Denny) Shepherd.
Lee Roy graduated from West Jefferson High School, West Jefferson, N.C., in 1950. He earned a BS in Mathematics from University of Southern Mississippi in 1970 and a MS in Education and Management from Chapman Collage in 1972.
Lee Roy served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired after 21 years of service. He retired again after 17 years with the Aberdeen, MD, Post office and teaching high school math. Lee Roy was a devoted husband and family man. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, country music, working around his home and on his 57 Chevy, and spending time with his family. He was a long time member and deacon at the Aberdeen Church of Christ, Aberdeen, MD.
In addition to his wife, Lee Roy is survived by his daughters and their husbands; his grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren. They loved him and will miss him very much.
A memorial service will be held at a later day. Donations may be made on his behalf to Aberdeen Church of Christ, 90 Mt Royal Avenue, Aberdeen, MD 21001.
