A wise man once opined in a 1789 letter that “nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

Although Benjamin Franklin was alluding to the promised permanency of “our new Constitution,” he certainly has a point. And, although our local libraries, senior centers and other resources can do little about the former, they can help with filing your financial federal duty.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for eligible low- to moderate-income county residents. The program at the Watauga County Public Library works in tandem with the IRS and is supported by Friends of the Library. Call the library at (828) 264-8784 for an appointment before April 13.

An online partnership between United Way, Goodwill and that National Disability Institute can assist tax preparation for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $66,000 or less. Visit www.highcountryunitedway.org.

A free tax help lab runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday through April 10 on the ASU campus in room 4015 of Peacock Hall.

AARP Tax-Aide offers help for eligible seniors at at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (828) 265-8090.

And, for taxpayers in Ashe County there are a couple of options.

The Ashe County Public Library offers VITA on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday with an appointment made by calling (336) 977-5829.

On Tuesday and Thursday, Ashe Services for Aging Senior Center also offers assistance until April 11. Call (336) 246-4347 for an appointment there.
