WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County boys and girls track teams recently competed in two meets, one at Bunker Hill and the other at Watauga High School.

At Bunker Hill, both Ashe County teams took first place, downing Bunker Hill, Hibriten, Patton, East Burke and Chase. In Watauga, the Huskies’ girls and boys teams placed second, with the Pioneers beating both Ashe County teams. Also competing in the meet was Freedom, West Caldwell, Avery and North Wilkes.

Girls team standouts at Bunker Hill included Mahaley Cronk, who finished second in the 800m run; Olivia Randolph, who finished third in the 800m run; Bella Potter, who finished second in the 100m hurdles, first in the high jump and first in the long jump; Macie Bowlin, who finished third in the 100m hurdles and second in the 200m hurdles; and Holly Grant, who finished third in the triple jump. Additionally, the girls 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams placed first in the meet.

At Watauga, Bella Powers finished third in the 100m dash and second in the 200m dash, Cronk finished first in the 800m run, Alexis Blevins finished second in the 400m dash, Malorie Eller finished second in the 800m run, Melena Howell finished third in the 100m hurdles and second in the pole vault and Potter finished first in the high jump and second in the long jump. The 4x800m relay team also finished in first place once again.

As for the boys in Bunker Hill, Josh Hardin finished second in the 100m dash and first in the 200m dash, Neil Pate finished third in the 200m dash, Ethan Pennington finished second in the 400m dash, Josh Roten finished first in the 1600m run, Tafton Baker finished first in the 3200m run, Mason Carpenter finished first in the 110m hurdles, Jason Durr finished first in the 300m hurdles, Grady Rector finished first in the high jump and Carter Wilson finished first in the shot put and first in discus.The boys 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams won first place in the meet, while the 4x100m relay placed second.

The boys team also had multiple participants make the podium in Boone, as Hardin finished first in the 400m dash, Pate finished third in the 800m run, Eli Randolph finished third in the 1600m run, Baker finished first in the 3200m run, Durr finished first in the 300m hurdles, Rector finished second in the high jump and Wilson once again took home first place in both the shot put and the discus. In this meet, the 4x100m and 4x800m relay teams took first place.

The Ashe County Huskies will host a home meet Thursday, April 4.
