A Matter of Balance

Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ashe Services for Aging, learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home and more. Ashe County School Supply Drive

Ashe County Volunteer Initiative Program’s 14th Annual Ashe County School Supply Drive will run from June 17 to Aug. 2 for students in need in Ashe County. The Riverview Community Center Thrift Store will have a Bag Sale and Back-to-School sale from July 17 through Aug. 3. Lots of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, brand new and gently used, will be for sale. The Thrift Store also offers for sale chairs, tables, lamps, glass and craft work, tools, rugs, jars and an assortment of household appliances. Emergency Services Recognition and Family Fun Day

The Museum of Ashe County History will hold an Emergency Services Recognition and Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20. Bounce Houses, train rides, activities and free fun for the whole family will be available.

Northwest Ashe Class of 1969 reunion

Riverview Community Center Teatre

Riverview Community Center Teatre presents music and storytelling, Saturday, July 20 at 6 p.m. in the Theatre Room. Hickory Trail Hike

Come and enjoy an informational guided 1-mile hike with a Ranger on the Hickory Trail. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. You may also like to bring a pair of binoculars for bird viewing and a camera to capture you adventure. We will meet at New River State Park’s U.S. 221 Access Visitor Center.

Tree Identification

Find out how to identify the common trees of the New River. Join Park staff in learning how to identify common trees of New River State Park. The leaves will finally be “leafing out” along the 1-mile Fern Nature trail at the Wagoner Access of New River State Park. Birds Bugs and Blooms

Bill Dunson, a retired biology professor from Penn State, will lead. We will walk downhill on a 1-mile section of the Mountain Ridge Trail between Jefferson and Sunrise Overlooks. Painting in the Park

Take advantage of the scenery and come up to relax on your mountain. We will provide free canvases and tempera paints. You provide the creativity. This is a free outdoor painting program for all ages. All supplies are free while they last. Starts at 2 p.m., meet at Mount Jefferson Picnic Area.

Jazz Quartet with Martha Bassett

Jazz Quartet with Martha Bassett, presented by Music Carolina and sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council, will perform at the Ashe Civic Center in West Jefferson Saturday, July 20. First Responders Recognition and Family Fun Day

Join the Museum of Ashe County History Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for First Responders Recognition and Family Fun Day. Area first responders will be on hand with cars and trucks, alongside bounce houses, train rides, activities and more. The Jefferson Odd Fellows will be selling food, and Hole Lotta Donuts will be on hand and are hosting a First Responders Donut Eating contest.

Guided Canoe Trip

Canoe the New River with a park ranger and learn the history of the river and basic canoe instruction while you enjoy a leisurely trip down the river. Please wear clothing and shoes suitable for the water and be aware that the water temperature is cooler than the air. We will meet at New River State Park’s U.S. 221 Access Visitor Center. Don’t forget to log your canoe trip, if you are working towards your 100 miles in the 100 mile challenge. Trees and Tees

Join us atop Mount Jefferson to both learn and create! We will learn about and discuss local trees and the pivotal role they play in our ecosystem. Each participant will be given one free tee shirt to decorate. We will provide the tee shirts, the paints, and other supplies, you provide the creativity. Fiddlers Convention

The Fiddlers Convention is a celebration and showcase of the musical talent and heritage of the high country of North Carolina. The Ashe County Arts Council is excited to sponsor the 50th annual Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27. Ashe County Park, in Jefferson, will be the place to enjoy music and see the best in the region’s old time traditional and bluegrass musicians. Admission is $5 on Friday and $10 on Saturday. The Blue Ridge Art Clan will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church in West Jefferson. Mount Jefferson Downhill Skateboarding Event

Mount Jefferson will be hosting its fourth annual Downhill Race on Saturday and Sunday. The race consists of high speed skateboarding down Mount Jefferson as well as street luge events. The park road will be closed to personal vehicles both days, however, transportation from the old Lowe’s parking lot to the picnic shelter atop Mount Jefferson will be provided. The meeting location for this transportation will be the old Lowe’s parking lot at the base of Mount Jefferson. All trails will be open to the public, so come out and enjoy your mountain and watch some high speed skateboarding.

The West Jefferson Women’s Club will hold its annual Game and Card Gala from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 31 at Hensley Hall at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. Cost is $25 per person, with proceeds going to the Ashe County Medication Assistance Program.

Rubber Duck Race and Festival

The Riverview Lions Club welcomes you to our “Do It Best” Rubber Duck Race and Festival by the river from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 rain or shine. Join a supportive journaling community at Ashe Services for Aging from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Friday of every month in classroom 2. Riverview Community Center Thrift Store

The Riverview Community Center, located at 11719 N.C. 88 West in Creston, has a thrift store which is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The thrift store has lots of spring and summer clothes for sale as well as books, furniture, home furnishings, flowering hanging baskets and ferns. Come by to shop and find some great deals.

WCC Amateur Radio Course

Beginning Jan. 31, Wilkes Community College will offer an amateur radio course on Thursdays at 6 p.m. in Thompson Hall Room 133. This course will enable students to earn a license to speak with people in foreign countries via shortwave radio, communicate with astronauts onboard the space station, participate in on-the-air contests, and provide communications for public service events. Alanon Meeting in Ashe County

Ashe County Sharing Center Mobile Pantries The Northwest Ashe Mobile

The Ashe County Sharing Center’s Northwest Ashe Mobile Pantry will be in Creston at the Creston Volunteer Fire Department the first Wednesday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The mobile Pantry will be in Lansing at the Phoenix Baptist Church the second Wednesday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Clients must have identification, be a resident of Creston, Lansing or Warrensville and visit the pantry in their area to qualify.

Breast Cancer Survivors Group

A Safe Home for Everyone of the Ashe County Partnership for Children’s support group for survivors of intimate partner violence and their children started back up in March of 2017. Thrive is a free support group offered once monthly on the second Tuesday of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. Dinner and childcare are provided free. Through this group, survivors can experience a safe, confidential place to explore the healing process, gain more information and understanding of how intimate partner violence impacts their daily lives and connect with others who have had similar experiences. Ashe Piecemakers Quilt Guild

Ashe County Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets at 2 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Ashe County Senior Center. After social time, the group has a show-and-tell, a business meeting and a program. If you would speak up, you might consider volunteering as a guardian ad litem, a court-appointed volunteer who serves as the judge’s eyes and ears for children going through the foster care system. Wings of Hope is a support group for mothers offering compassion and help and healing from postpartum depression to the loss of a child or infant.
